According to legend, Adonis, the Greek god of beauty, desire, and rebirth, would tragically die while hunting. Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) would rush to his side, cutting herself on a thorn from a rose bush. The rose, a symbol of Aphrodite, created pure and white, was now a brilliant crimson shade of red, stained by her blood. A kiss from the goddess Aphrodite would awaken Adonis; thus, the circle of life would continue.
